Scientific symposium in cooperation with the ABIL, the KUG and the UWK
The symposium, which is being held for the first time in cooperation not only with the Anton Bruckner Institute Linz (ABIL), but also with the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) and the University of Continuing Education Krems (UWK), does not deal with Anton Bruckner this time, but with female musicians and composers of his time. The social position and the socio-cultural environment of musically active women, their assessment by colleagues and the male-dominated contemporary critics, their public image and their representation in literature will be discussed. Their activities as folk musicians and music collectors as well as their role as hosts of musical salons and patrons of music are also examined. Life and career paths are traced, the training situation and study opportunities as well as the (in)compatibility of family and career are discussed. The fact that female singers experienced almost cult-like veneration, while female instrumentalists, with a few exceptions, were practically only successful as pianists, finally raises the question of the significance of physicality in 19th-century music.
