PIONEERS 52 HZ

LINZER KLANGWOLKE 24
presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG

Eight pioneers and their visions, their research, their expertise, their thirst for discovery and their courage are at the centre of PIONEERS 52 Hz, Linzer Klangwolke 24, presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG. Just like the pioneers, who were often ridiculed in the beginning for their ideas, their urge to explore and their questioning of the status quo, today it is the visionaries who open up new paths and teach us time and again how important it is not to rule out the seemingly impossible. Let's embark together on a fantastic journey of discovery, starting in the depths of the ocean and ending in distant galaxies, where life is breathed into oversized figures by the Catalan artist group La Fura dels Baus. Why outer space? Gustav Holst's world-famous orchestral suite The Planets, paired with a sound design by La Fura specially developed for Linzer Klangwolke 24, provides the musical basis for this year's production. Holst's The Planets is one of the very few compositions to be influenced by astrology. Why to the depths of the oceans? Let's get involved in the mystery of where the inexplicable sounds of "the loneliest whale in the world" or, in other words, the frequency 52 Hz, which is present as an ocean echo in many research projects, come from and experience the spectacular 45th Linzer Klangwolke 24 together with a unique sound and light show and fascinating video projections under the title PIONEERS 52 Hz.

PIONEERS AND THEIR BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENTS FOR HUMANITY

What did the "magician of electricity", one of the most important whale researchers who studied the songs of humpback whales, the first woman ever to study maths and physics and later to be involved in the research that led to the Nobel Prize award, one of the most important choreographers of all time and the pioneer of primate research, who was the first to research wild chimpanzees and who sees the protection of the planet as a top priority, as well as the founder of modern natural sciences who proved that the planets move around the sun, one of Austria's most popular and at the same time most controversial painters and representatives of Viennese Art Nouveau and the scientist who coined the word "radioactive", and what do their respective brilliant achievements have to do with Klangwolke 24? It is precisely these pioneers, idea generators and visionaries, their life stories, their courage, their "otherness", their belief in their own research and their questioning of the status quo that are the focus of this year's Klangwolke production, because they are all pioneers! Klangwolke 24 is dedicated to these people under the title PIONEERS 52 Hz: Roger Payne, Pina Bausch, Mileva Marić, Gustav Klimt, Marie Curie, Johannes Kepler, Nikola Tesla and Jane Goodall.

LIFE IS BREATHED INTO OVERSIZED FIGURES

The Linzer Klangwolke 24, presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG, is a multi-media and interactive show in which oversized figures will be playing with their fascinating power, moving in harmony with light and sound effects as well as video projections in the middle of the Danube and creating excitement. An inexplicable echo of the sea will be heard along the banks of the Danube, perhaps the "loneliest whale in the world" will rise up from the waters of the Danube and cause a sensation, the research of world-famous pioneers will take centre stage and eight planets will play an important musical role. This year, the globally successful Catalan artists' collective La Fura dels Baus is responsible for the production. The heroes of Klangwolke PAX, which attracted more than 100,000 visitors to Linz's Donaulände in 2018 and is considered one of the most successful, impressive and popular Klangwolke productions of all time, are returning to Linz.

CATALAN ARTIST GROUP LA FURA DELS BAUS STAGES PIONEERS 52 HZ

With incessant curiosity and the need to explore new artistic trends that has surrounded the pioneers of La Fura dels Baus since its foundation, the pioneers of the La Fura dels Baus group of artists have developed a unique language, a particular unique style and a new aesthetic of the concept of art in a collective creative process. Formal technical procedures, which are related to the special and interpretative dimension of staging, form the basic framework of La Fura's works. The ability to combine and adapt mysticism, nature, art, oversize and sophistication, simplicity and technology in each installation and their visionary installations have made La Fura dels Baus one of the most successful artist collectives worldwide. The Spaniards are known for their impressive staging of major events such as the opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games, which was watched by more than 500 million viewers on television. To date, one of the world's most successful artist collectives can look back on more than 3,500 performances on four of the five continents, which have been seen live by more than 4 million viewers.

MAGICAL, MYSTICAL, SOUND-RICH DISCOVERY TOUR FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEANS TO DISTANT GALAXIES

On 7 September 2024, at 8.30 pm, sound cloud lovers can look forward to a magical, mystical, sound-rich, exciting and fascinating journey of discovery together through diverse worlds from the depths of the oceans to distant galaxies. Because PIONEERS 52 Hz sets out to unravel a very specific mystery: a 52 Hz sound that has been appearing and disappearing in the deep sea for 30 years provided the impetus for this year's production. In the past, many researchers have hypothesised that this inexplicable sound could come from a whale. If this assumption were to prove true, it would be the discovery of a new species, as none of the whale species known to date sing at this mysterious frequency. This ocean echo immerses Soundcloud visitors in an enigma that awakens their curiosity and invites them to explore further deep secrets. The enigma of the 52-hertz tone becomes the sounding symbol of Klangwolke 24 and at the same time it is a call to modern explorers to explain, question and explore the inexplicable. Contemporary scientists are still embarking on expeditions to decipher the secrets of the sea, the universe and our evolution. It is not only the hitherto inexplicable 52 Hz frequency that is still being attempted to be deciphered; our life on Earth, the intricate web of connections between life forms, galaxies and myths is also being researched, investigated and questioned by pioneers on a daily basis. This year's PIONEERS 52 Hz sound cloud is dedicated to eight pioneers and their achievements, their life journeys, their courage and their visions.

Just like the pioneers, who were often ridiculed at first for their ideas, their thirst for research, for questioning the status quo, for being different from everyone else, it is the visionaries today who open up new paths and teach us time and again how important it is not to rule out the seemingly impossible. Their courage to challenge and question the mainstream has paved the way for new paradigms and shown that the spark of innovation often lies in "madness".

GUSTAV HOLST'S WORLD-FAMOUS SUITE THE PLANETS

The Spanish artist group La Fura dels Baus has deliberately opted for a musical setting that will extend into outer space. Perhaps you are asking yourself why on planets? After all, only one of the pioneers whose paths this year's production illuminates in more detail, namely the astronomer, physicist and mathematician Johannes Kepler, has a concrete connection to outer space! One explanation is, of course, that the "infinite vastness" of the universe is far from being explored down to the smallest detail and therefore offers many opportunities for discovery for a long time to come. Another explanation is that the musical basis that surrounds Klangwolke 24 will be the orchestral suite The Planets by the English composer Gustav Holst. Surrounded by the sounds of Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, eight researchers will be staged at this year's Klangwolke 24, presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG.

Gustav Holst's world-famous suite The Planets is one of the very few compositions influenced by astrology. With The Planets/The Planets Suite, the English composer Gustav Holst created a suite for orchestra consisting of seven movements. Each movement is linked to a planet in the solar system and named after it, although Holst omitted the Earth. In 2006, the concept of planets was redefined, as a result of which Pluto lost its status as a planet. Holst did not set the Earth to music either. This left seven planets, which Gustav Holst arranged neither according to their distance from the sun nor the earth, but in the chronological order of the signs of the zodiac to which the planets are assigned - further evidence of the astrological penetration of the work.

The order almost corresponds to the sequence in the solar system, although Holst swapped Mars and Mercury. It was not astronomical accuracy that was important to Holst, but rather the characterisations of the Roman deities whose names are used for the planets. Mars, for example, is referred to as "the bringer of war", Venus as "the bringer of peace" and Mercury as "the winged messenger".  The suite for large orchestra The Planets is divided into seven individual movements. With a sound design specially developed by La Fura dels Baus for the Linzer Klangwolke 24, Holst's The Planets will be adapted for the Linzer Klangwolke 2024, turning PIONEERS 52 Hz into a unique total work of art and listening experience.
