Anton Bruckner ranks as one of the greatest organists of his time, celebrated above all for his mastery of improvisation. Hardly any of his own organ compositions remain, however. „No, the world is too bad, I write nothing for the organ“, is a remark he is reported to have made once to his pupil Franz Marschner. Posterity has nevertheless concerned itself with the handful of works he left behind. The origins and variety of these pieces – written versions of improvisations on memorial compositions, works based on original Bruckner themes (from the symphonies as well) up to abstract-aesthetic concepts by declared „Bruckner disciples“ - can be experienced in this recital by the internationally renowned organist Hansjörg Albrecht, who has given numerous concerts on the organs of the greatest concert halls and cathedrals in Europe and the USA. A CD project he has just initiated has already attracted a great deal of attention: Albrecht is to record all the Bruckner symphonies in organ transcriptions by Bruckner's 200th birthday in 2024. These will be combined with newly composed Bruckner-Fenstern (Bruckner windows), which look at Bruckner's symphonies from the standpoint of the present day – two of them are included in the concert programme.
